Technical Council Representative

Jim Lorenzen was born and raised on a farm in Iowa, a farm that used John Deere Tractors and equipment. After graduating from high school in 1962, he went to Iowa State University to study farming operations. While there, he joined the U.S. Army Reserves, and that’s where his mechanical training began. Jim went into the Ordnance branch of the U.S. Army, and received training on the repair of all Army vehicles from Jeeps to tanks.

Upon returning home, Jim helped on the farm as well as took a maintenance job at an implement store in Traer, Iowa. At the same time, he went to Hawkeye Technical College to become certified in seven areas of automotive repair, and also took classes in tractor/auto air conditioning repair, small engine repair, and welding.

In 1964, Jim joined the John Deere dealership of Ray Holst, Inc. in Traer. As a service technician, he worked on Waterloo and Dubuque tractors and assembled implements for delivery. The dealership sent technicians to Service School every winter for updates on existing equipment problems and training on new products.

Jim was employed at the dealership until 1977, and worked on many models of tractors built from 1930 through 1977. It was 2004 that he saw the notice in Two- Cylinder about needing a Technical Council Representative with specific experience. He contacted the Club office, and has been actively involved since that day.

Jim has responded to more member request than any other tech representative since the program began. The office regularly receives notes, E-mails, and phone calls complimenting him for his prompt, knowledgeable, and courteous service.
